Best Time to Visit Sarasota: Weather, Water Temps and Crowds by Month

The best time to visit Sarasota depends on what you want most: perfect weather, warm water for swimming, or quiet beaches. They don't all peak in the same month. This guide walks through Sarasota month by month using National Weather Service climate normals, NOAA water temperature readings and passenger counts from Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, plus the facts on hurricane season and red tide.

Best Time to Visit Sarasota at a Glance

  • Best weather: March and April. Highs in the upper 70s to low 80s and little rain.
  • Warmest water: June through September, when the Gulf runs in the upper 80s.
  • Busiest: February through April. March is the airport's busiest month of the year.
  • Quietest: September, with the lowest passenger counts of the year.
  • Sweet spots: late October through early December, and May.
  • Hurricane season: June 1 to November 30, with most activity from mid-August to mid-October.
  • Red tide: not tied to a season. Check current conditions before any beach day.

Month by Month

Air temperatures below are the 1991 to 2020 normals for the Sarasota-Bradenton airport from the National Weather Service. Water temperatures are rounded averages of NOAA tide gauge readings from 2021 to 2025 at Clearwater Beach and Port Manatee, the nearest NOAA stations that report water temperature. The Gulf at the local beaches is usually in the same range.

Winter: December, January and February

  • December: highs about 75, lows about 55. Water in the upper 60s.
  • January: the coolest month. Highs about 72, lows about 52. Water in the low to mid 60s.
  • February: highs about 75, lows about 55. Water in the mid 60s.

Winter is sunny, dry and mild, which is exactly why so many people from the Northeast and Midwest come. Days are warm enough for the beach, but most visitors walk and wade rather than swim. Evenings are cool, so bring a sweatshirt.

Spring: March, April and May

  • March: highs about 78, lows about 58. Water in the low 70s.
  • April: highs about 82, lows about 63. Water in the upper 70s.
  • May: highs about 87, lows about 68. Water in the low 80s.

Spring has the best weather of the year for most people, and the crowds to match. May is a quieter bonus month: the water is warm, the rainy season hasn't fully started, and the spring rush is over.

Summer: June, July, August and September

  • Highs: about 90 to 91 every month, with lows around 74 to 75.
  • Rain: 6 to 9 inches a month. August is the wettest month at about 9.1 inches, more than three times January's total.
  • Water: mid to upper 80s, close to 90 in July and August.

Summer is hot, humid and wet, but the rain tends to come in afternoon storms that build along the sea breeze. Plan beach time for the morning and indoor time, like The Ringling, for the afternoon.

Fall: October and November

  • October: highs about 86, lows about 68. Water in the upper 70s.
  • November: highs about 80, lows about 60. Water in the low 70s.

Rain drops off through October, humidity eases, and the water stays warm enough to swim. It's one of the most underrated times to visit, as long as you keep an eye on the tropics.

When Is Sarasota Crowded?

Airport traffic is a good way to see the season. Passenger counts at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) show a clear pattern:

  • Peak: March 2025 was the busiest month in the airport's history, with about 598,000 passengers. April 2026 had about 486,000 and February 2026 about 444,000.
  • Busy holidays: about 417,000 in December 2025.
  • Slowest: about 217,000 in September 2025, well under half of March.
  • Picking up: about 341,000 in October 2025 and 371,000 in November 2025.

What that means for your trip: from February through April, book hotels and dinner reservations early and get to the beach before 10 a.m. for parking. Spring training and spring break both fall in this window. In September and early fall, you'll have more room on the sand and more choice of places to stay.

Hurricane Season: What Visitors Should Know

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. According to NOAA's National Hurricane Center, most activity happens between mid-August and mid-October, with the statistical peak around September 10.

Most weeks in hurricane season pass without a storm, but the 2024 season was a reminder that it matters: Hurricanes Helene and Milton both affected the area that fall. If you travel from August through October:

  • Watch the National Hurricane Center forecasts in the week before you leave.
  • Read the cancellation policies for your flights and lodging before you book.
  • Consider travel insurance, and read what it covers for named storms.

Red Tide: The Honest Answer

Red tide is a bloom of a microscopic algae called Karenia brevis. It can cause respiratory irritation and fish kills when it reaches the beach. Low background levels are normal in Gulf waters year round, and blooms do not follow a reliable calendar. They can start in different seasons, last weeks or months, and affect one beach while another a few miles away is clear.

Forecasts only look a few days ahead, so there's no "red tide season" to plan around months in advance. Instead, check right before and during your trip:

  • Mote Marine Laboratory's Beach Conditions Reporting System (visitbeaches.org or the app) reports respiratory irritation, dead fish and water color at local beaches.
  • The FWC red tide status page posts the latest statewide sampling results several times a month.

If your beach is affected, try another one or plan an inland day. Our red tide guide for visitors has more detail.

Events Worth Planning Around

  • November: the Siesta Key Crystal Classic sand sculpting festival, November 13 to 16, 2026, on Siesta Key Beach.
  • Winter: art festivals on St. Armands Circle and downtown fill weekends from January into February. Check the St. Armands Circle Association and Visit Sarasota calendars for exact dates.
  • Late February to March: Orioles spring training at Ed Smith Stadium. The 2027 home schedule starts February 19 and the last home game is March 19.
  • May 1 to October 31: sea turtle nesting season. Take your beach gear off the sand at sunset and keep lights off the beach at night.

So, When Should You Go?

  • For the best weather: March or April, and book early.
  • To escape winter up north: January or February. Expect sunny 70s and cool nights.
  • For swimming and lower crowds: May, or late October into November.
  • For the lowest prices and emptiest beaches: September, if you're flexible and comfortable watching the tropics.

Pack for the Month You Pick

Whatever month you choose, two things are true: the sun is strong, and winter evenings are cooler than people expect. For winter trips, pack a sweatshirt like the Longboat Timber Crew or the women's Longboat Key Mock Neck. For summer, a light sun shirt like the Lido Key TASC Long Sleeve and a Siesta Key cap go a long way. Don't forget sunscreen, in any month. Our full list is in what to pack for Sarasota.
