Lido Key is the island just past St. Armands Circle, and it's really three different beach days in one: a classic family beach with lifeguards and a snack bar, a wild stretch of sand where you might not see another person, and a park where you can paddle through tunnels of mangroves. Here's how to choose, where to park, and what's changed on Lido this year.
Lido Key at a Glance
- Main beach: Lido Beach, 400 Ben Franklin Drive. Open 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Parking: a free lot at the main beach, plus metered spaces along Ben Franklin Drive.
- Facilities: restrooms, showers, lifeguards, a pool and the Lido Island Grill at the main beach.
- From St. Armands Circle: about a 10-minute walk, or ride the free Bay Runner trolley.
- Dogs: not allowed on Lido Beach.
- Sunset: right over the Gulf. Around 5:40 p.m. in December and close to 8:30 p.m. in late June.
What's New on Lido Beach in 2026
Lido got a lot of attention this year. A federal beach renourishment project finished in May 2026 and added about 300,000 cubic yards of sand along 1.2 miles of shoreline, so the beach is noticeably wider than it was after the 2024 hurricanes.
The city is now rebuilding the dunes from the pavilion south to Ted Sperling Park, with work expected to run into early 2027. The beach is open, but you may find a few sections roped off, a beach walkover closed, or part of the parking lot south of the pavilion used by construction crews. If one access point is closed, walk a little further to the next.
Option 1: Lido Beach (Best for Families and First Visits)
This is the beach most people mean when they say Lido. It has everything you need for an easy day:
- A free parking lot with about 370 spaces, plus metered spots along Ben Franklin Drive. The lot fills up on winter and spring weekends, so arrive before 10 a.m. or come back for sunset.
- Lifeguards, restrooms and outdoor showers.
- The Lido Island Grill for food and cold drinks without leaving the sand.
- The Lido Pool, a public pool right behind the beach. Hours vary by season, so call 941-263-6732 before you plan around it.
The sand is soft and white and the water is usually calm, which is why it's our first recommendation for families with little kids.
Option 2: North Lido (Best for Quiet and Shelling)
Walk north from the main beach and the crowds thin out fast. North Lido Beach Park has about 22 acres of beach and mangroves backed by pine woods with walking trails. It's the spot for long walks, shelling and a little solitude.
Know before you go: there are no lifeguards and no facilities, so use the restrooms at the main beach first and bring plenty of water. Parking on the road is limited, so many people park at the main lot and walk up.
Option 3: South Lido and the Mangrove Tunnels (Best for Adventure)
At the southern tip of the island, Ted Sperling Park at South Lido Beach (2201 Ben Franklin Drive) has shady picnic areas, a playground, restrooms and a kayak launch. It reopened in March 2025 after the hurricanes.
The highlight is the mangrove tunnels, a paddling trail where the trees close in overhead and you glide through narrow, shaded channels. Look for herons, mullet jumping and, if you're lucky, a manatee. Several local outfitters rent kayaks and paddleboards and run guided tours that launch from Taft Drive. Book ahead in busy season, and ask about the tide, since it affects how easy the paddle is.
Important: South Lido is a no-swimming area. Four bodies of water meet here and the currents are strong. Enjoy the view, picnic and paddle, but save your swim for the main beach.
Know Before You Go
- Check the beach report. Mote Marine Laboratory's free Beach Conditions Reporting System (visitbeaches.org or the app) shows water color, wind, dead fish and respiratory irritation, which matters during a red tide.
- Check water quality. The county tests beach water weekly and posts swim advisories when bacteria levels are high.
- Sea turtle season runs May 1 to October 31. Turtles nest on Lido, so take your chairs and umbrellas off the beach at sunset, fill in any holes you dig, and keep lights off the sand at night.
- Leave the dog at home. Dogs aren't allowed on Lido Beach, leashed or not.
- Stay for sunset. Lido faces west, so you get the whole show over the water.
Why Is It Called Lido?
Circus magnate John Ringling owned this island in the 1920s and renamed it after the Lido in Venice, Italy, the same Italian dream behind the statues on St. Armands Circle. From about 1940 into the 1960s, the beach was home to the Lido Casino, an Art Deco beach club with a pool and ballroom that is still a local legend.
What to Bring (and Where to Get It on the Way)
Lido is a few minutes from St. Armands Circle, so if you forgot something, stop at The Sarasota Style at 410 St. Armands Circle on your way over. The essentials:
- Sunscreen and SPF lip balm. The sun is strong here even in January. We carry Sun Bum, including the Mineral Sunscreen Spray and SPF 30 lip balm.
- A hat. There's very little natural shade on the main beach. Try a Lido Key cap or our Cool Fit Visor if you want air on top.
- A sun shirt for the kayak. On the water you get sun from above and glare from below. The Lido Key TASC long sleeve is light and soft enough to paddle in.
- Something to keep drinks cold. A drink huggie weighs nothing and goes in any beach bag.
- Water shoes if you're heading to the mangroves, and a dry bag for your phone.
