Sarasota has more good beaches than most visitors have days, and they're not interchangeable. Some have lifeguards, snack bars and big free lots. Others have no facilities at all and maybe a dozen other people. This guide to the best beaches in Sarasota gives you the essentials for each one and a quick verdict on who it suits, so you can match the beach to the day you want.
Sarasota Beaches at a Glance
- Best overall: Siesta Beach, for the white quartz sand and full facilities.
- Closest to St. Armands Circle: Lido Beach, about a 10-minute walk.
- Quietest: Longboat Key's public accesses and North Lido.
- Best for adventure: South Lido's mangrove tunnels and Beer Can Island on Longboat.
- Dogs: not allowed on Siesta, Lido or Longboat beaches.
- Before you go: check Mote Marine Laboratory's Beach Conditions Reporting System at visitbeaches.org for water color, wind and red tide irritation.
The Best Beaches on Siesta Key
Siesta Beach
Sarasota's most famous beach, at 948 Beach Road, has sand that is about 99 percent quartz, so it's brilliant white and stays cool underfoot. Dr. Beach named it the best beach in America in 2011 and 2017. There's a free lot of about 950 spaces, lifeguards, restrooms, showers, concessions, a playground and courts. On Sundays, the drum circle gathers about an hour before sunset.
Who it suits: first-timers, families and anyone who wants the full-service beach day. Come early in season, because the lot fills. See our Siesta Key Beach guide for parking tips.
Crescent Beach and Point of Rocks
Just south of Siesta Beach, Crescent Beach has the same quartz sand with a fraction of the people, because it's lined with condos and public access is limited. Beach Access 12, near South Village, has a small lot. At the south end, Point of Rocks has limestone formations in shallow water that attract snorkelers on calm days.
Who it suits: people staying nearby, long beach walkers and snorkelers. Not ideal if you need a guaranteed parking spot.
Turtle Beach
Near the south tip of Siesta Key, Turtle Beach has coarser, darker sand, more shells and a much more relaxed feel. It has a lot of about 200 spaces. Parts of the park and the neighboring campground were damaged in the 2024 hurricanes and reopened in stages, so check the county's park status before you go.
Who it suits: shell collectors and anyone who wants Siesta Key without the Siesta crowds.
The Best Beaches on Lido Key
Lido is the closest beach to St. Armands Circle and downtown, and it has three very different personalities. We cover all of them in detail in our Lido Beach guide, so here's the quick version.
Lido Beach
The main beach at 400 Ben Franklin Drive has a free lot, lifeguards, restrooms, the Lido Island Grill and a public pool. A renourishment project finished in May 2026 made the beach noticeably wider, though dune work continues into early 2027.
Who it suits: families, and couples who want to combine a beach morning with lunch and shopping on St. Armands.
North Lido
Walk north from the main beach and the crowds disappear. North Lido has sand, mangroves and wooded trails, but no lifeguards or facilities.
Who it suits: walkers, shellers and anyone who wants solitude within reach of a restroom.
South Lido (Ted Sperling Park)
At the south tip of Lido, this park has picnic areas, a kayak launch and the mangrove tunnels, a shaded paddling trail. It is a no-swimming area because of strong currents.
Who it suits: paddlers, picnickers and nature lovers. Swim somewhere else.
The Best Beaches on Longboat Key
Longboat Key Public Accesses
Longboat Key has about a dozen public beach accesses along Gulf of Mexico Drive, marked with blue signs. Each has a small free parking area, roughly 15 to 40 spaces, and most have no restrooms. There are no lifeguards on Longboat. In return you get long, uncrowded stretches of sand. Bayfront Park, mid-key, makes an easy base, with parking across the road from the beach access at 4001 Gulf of Mexico Drive.
Who it suits: couples and walkers who want peace and quiet and are comfortable without lifeguards or facilities. Our Longboat Key guide lists every access.
Beer Can Island (Greer Island)
The sandy north tip of Longboat Key at Longboat Pass is a mix of wide beach, mangroves and bleached driftwood. Park at the North Shore Road or Broadway Street access and walk north. There are no facilities, and the current in the pass is strong.
Who it suits: photographers, birders and explorers. Not a swimming beach, and not for anyone who needs a restroom nearby.
Farther South: Venice Beaches
If you have a car and an extra day, the beaches around Venice, south of Sarasota, are known for fossilized shark teeth.
- Venice Beach was renourished along about 3.2 miles of shoreline in a project wrapping up in fall 2026, with a pavilion near the Venice Fishing Pier. Who it suits: families and shark tooth hunters.
- Caspersen Beach is the best known spot for shark teeth, but its road access, parking and restrooms were closed after the 2024 storms, with walk-in access from the Brohard Beach area. Check current access before you go. Who it suits: dedicated fossil hunters.
- Brohard Paw Park is a dog-friendly beach in Venice. Who it suits: anyone traveling with a dog.
Tips for Any Sarasota Beach
- Go early or late in season. January through April is peak, and spring break weeks in March are the busiest. Lots fill by mid morning.
- Stay for sunset. Every Gulf beach here faces west.
- Respect sea turtle season, May 1 to October 31. Take your gear home at night, fill in holes and keep lights off the sand.
- Know the smoking rule. Smoking is banned on Sarasota County beaches and in county parks, including parking lots.
- Swim where there are lifeguards if anyone in your group isn't a strong swimmer, and stay away from passes and inlets.
What to Pack for a Sarasota Beach Day
Many of the quieter beaches have nowhere to buy anything, so pack before you go. The Sarasota Style at 410 St. Armands Circle is on the way to Lido and Longboat:
- Sun protection: Sun Bum Mineral Sunscreen Spray and SPF 30 lip balm.
- A hat with your favorite island on it: the Lido Key cap, Longboat Key cap or Siesta Key cap.
- A sun shirt: the Sarasota Performance Keys Long Sleeve covers your arms and has a map of the keys on it.
- A towel and cold water: our Sarasota Beach Towel and Sarasota Water Bottle.
