Best Sunset Spots in Sarasota: Gulf Beaches, Bayfront Views and Tips

Calm Sarasota Bay at dusk with an old wooden piling

Sarasota sits on the west coast of Florida, so the sun sets over the water here every clear evening. The question is which water. From the barrier island beaches you watch it drop straight into the Gulf. From the downtown bayfront you watch it sink behind the islands across Sarasota Bay. Here are the best sunset spots in Sarasota, how to choose between the Gulf and the bay, where to park and a few tips we share with visitors every day.

Sarasota Sunsets at a Glance

  • Sunset times: earliest around 5:35 p.m. in late November and early December. Latest around 8:30 p.m. in late June and early July.
  • Sun into the water: the Gulf beaches on Lido Key, Siesta Key and Longboat Key all face west.
  • Sun behind the skyline and islands: the downtown bayfront, The Bay Park and the John Ringling Bridge.
  • Sunday tradition: the Siesta Key drum circle, starting about an hour before sunset.
  • Parking: Sarasota County beach lots close at 10 p.m. and don't allow overnight parking.

Gulf or Bay? How to Choose

Sarasota is protected by a chain of barrier islands, or keys. The Gulf of Mexico is on their west side, and Sarasota Bay sits between the islands and the mainland.

  • Choose a Gulf beach if you want the classic shot: the sun touching the horizon over open water, with nothing in the way.
  • Choose the bayfront if you want sunset with dinner, a drink or a city walk. The sun goes down behind Lido Key and St. Armands, so you lose the horizon but get pink and orange skies over sailboats and the Ringling Bridge.

Siesta Beach (Best for a Sunset Crowd and the Drum Circle)

Siesta Beach, at 948 Beach Road on Siesta Key, is famous for its soft, white quartz sand and its wide, flat shoreline. At sunset the sand turns pink and the beach fills with people walking the water's edge.

  • Parking: Sarasota County lists about 950 free spaces, the most of any county beach. The lot can still fill in winter and spring, so arrive an hour before sunset.
  • The drum circle: every Sunday, drummers and dancers gather on the beach about an hour before sunset and play until the sun goes down. It's free and family friendly. Look for it just south of the main pavilion. It's only canceled for things like hurricanes or red tide.
  • Before you go: park hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., so you have plenty of time to linger after sunset.

Lido Beach (Best Near St. Armands Circle)

Lido Beach is the closest Gulf beach to St. Armands Circle, about a 10-minute walk away, which makes it our favorite way to end a shopping day. The main beach is at 400 Ben Franklin Drive, with a free lot of about 370 spaces plus metered spaces along Ben Franklin Drive. The free Bay Runner trolley also stops at the Lido pavilion.

For a quieter sunset, walk north from the main beach toward North Lido, where the crowds thin out fast. There are no facilities up there, so use the restrooms at the pavilion first. Our Lido Beach guide covers the whole island.

Quieter Gulf Beaches for Sunset

  • Turtle Beach, south Siesta Key: at the south end of Siesta Key off Midnight Pass Road. The sand is coarser and darker than Siesta Beach, and it's usually much less crowded at sunset.
  • Crescent Beach and Point of Rocks: south of Siesta Beach, with the same quartz sand and the rocky outcrop at Point of Rocks at its southern end. Public parking is very limited, so the easiest way in is a long sunset walk south along the water from Siesta Beach.
  • Beer Can Island, north Longboat Key: a wild, driftwood-strewn beach at the north tip of Longboat Key. There are no restrooms, dogs and alcohol aren't allowed, and parking along North Shore Road is limited and strictly enforced. Read the signs carefully.
  • Venice Fishing Pier: about 40 minutes south, the pier fully reopened in September 2025 after hurricane damage, and it's a great place to watch the sun go down over the Gulf.

Bayfront Sunset Spots Downtown

  • Bayfront Park and Marina Jack: walk the seawall along the marina at 2 Marina Plaza, past the giant "Unconditional Surrender" sailor-and-nurse statue, as the boats in the harbor light up. Marina Jack's restaurants overlook the water if you want sunset with dinner.
  • The Bay Park: Sarasota's newest bayfront park, at 1055 Boulevard of the Arts, is open 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Find a bench along the water or a spot on the lawn and watch the sky change over the bay.
  • The John Ringling Bridge: walking the bridge between downtown and St. Armands at sunset is a local favorite in the cooler months. You get a high view of the bay, the marina and the downtown skyline turning gold.
  • Bird Key Park: a small city park just off the south side of the Ringling Causeway, open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Bring a folding chair and watch the sun drop behind St. Armands.
  • Rooftop bars: several downtown hotels have rooftop bars open to non-guests, with skyline and bay views. Check hours and whether they take reservations.

An Inland Surprise: The Celery Fields

East of downtown, the Celery Fields is a large wetland preserve known for birdwatching. A tall, grassy hill there has benches that face west, so you get a wide-open sunset over the marshes. It's a good choice if you want birds, quiet and no sand in your shoes.

Tips for the Best Sunset

  • Arrive 45 minutes to an hour early in winter and spring, especially on weekends, to park and pick your spot.
  • Stay 15 to 20 minutes after. The sky often puts on its best color after the sun is gone, and most of the crowd has already left.
  • Watch for the green flash. On very clear evenings over the Gulf, you may see a quick green flash right as the sun disappears. It's rare, which is part of the fun.
  • Bring a layer from November to March. It cools off fast once the sun goes down, especially with a breeze off the water.
  • Check the beach report. During a red tide, Mote Marine Laboratory's Beach Conditions Reporting System (visitbeaches.org) shows which beaches are clear. If the Gulf is rough, the bayfront is a great plan B.
  • Turtle season: from May 1 to October 31, sea turtles nest on our beaches. Take your chairs off the sand and keep flashlights and phone lights off the beach after dark.

What to Bring for Sunset

A sunset at the beach is easy, but a few things make it better. If you're near St. Armands Circle, stop by The Sarasota Style at 410 St. Armands Circle on your way to Lido.

Best Sunset Spots in Sarasota FAQ

What is the best place to watch the sunset in Sarasota?

For sunset over open water, go to a Gulf beach like Siesta Beach or Lido Beach. For sunset with dinner or a walk, try Bayfront Park and Marina Jack downtown or the John Ringling Bridge.

Do Sarasota beaches face west?

Yes. The Gulf beaches on Lido Key, Siesta Key and Longboat Key face west, so the sun sets directly over the water. The downtown bayfront also looks west, but the sun sets behind the barrier islands.

What time is sunset in Sarasota?

It ranges from about 5:35 p.m. in late November and early December to about 8:30 p.m. in late June and early July. Check a sunset table for your exact dates.

When is the Siesta Key drum circle?

Every Sunday on Siesta Beach, starting about an hour before sunset and ending when the sun goes down. It's free and gathers just south of the main pavilion.

Is parking free at Siesta Beach for sunset?

Yes. Siesta Beach has about 950 free spaces, but the lot fills on busy winter and spring evenings, so arrive about an hour early. County beach parking closes at 10 p.m.

Is Lido Beach good for sunset?

Yes. Lido faces west over the Gulf, has a free parking lot, and is about a 10-minute walk from St. Armands Circle.

Can you watch the sunset from downtown Sarasota?

Yes. Bayfront Park, Marina Jack and The Bay Park all look west over Sarasota Bay. The sun sets behind Lido Key and St. Armands, so expect colorful skies over the water rather than a sun-on-the-horizon view.

Can you walk the Ringling Bridge at sunset?

Yes, it's a popular sunset walk, especially in the cooler months. You can park at Bird Key Park or near the downtown bayfront and walk up for views of the bay and skyline.

What is the green flash at sunset?

A brief flash of green light that can appear right as the sun slips below a clear, flat horizon. It's rare and lasts a second or two, so the Gulf beaches give you the best chance.

Can I bring drinks to the beach for sunset?

Yes, but no glass. Glass containers aren't allowed on Sarasota beaches, and Longboat Key doesn't allow alcohol on its beaches, so check the posted rules where you go.
