Downtown Sarasota Guide: Main Street, the Bayfront, Farmers Market and Arts

Sarasota Bay with the downtown Sarasota skyline in the distance

Downtown Sarasota is where the city goes to eat, see a show and walk by the water. In one compact area you'll find Main Street's restaurants and shops, a Saturday farmers market, a new bayfront park, the marina, a botanical garden and a 100-year-old opera house. This downtown Sarasota guide covers what to see, where to park, what's new and how to connect downtown with St. Armands Circle and the beaches.

Downtown Sarasota at a Glance

  • The heart of it: Main Street, running east from the bayfront, plus the side streets around it.
  • Parking: city garages on Palm Avenue and State Street give you the first hour free when you enter your license plate, then charge a low hourly rate. Street parking is paid most of the day and evening.
  • Farmers market: Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Main Street and Lemon Avenue.
  • The Bay Park: 1055 Boulevard of the Arts, open 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Selby Gardens: 1534 Mound Street, open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • To St. Armands and Lido: take the free Bay Runner trolley over the Ringling Bridge.

Main Street and Around

Main Street is downtown's spine. Starting near the bayfront and heading east, it's lined with restaurants, cafes, bars, galleries and boutiques, with more on the side streets like Palm Avenue, Pineapple Avenue and Lemon Avenue. It's an easy, flat area to explore on foot, and it stays lively into the evening, especially in season.

Our tip: don't try to plan every stop. Park once, walk Main Street toward the water, wander a couple of side streets and pick a patio that looks good. If you're here for dinner on a weekend from January through April, make a reservation.

Sarasota Farmers Market

Every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Sarasota Farmers Market sets up downtown at Main Street and Lemon Avenue, rain or shine. Expect local produce, flowers, baked goods, prepared food and crafts, plus a lot of people walking dogs and carrying coffee.

  • Go early for the best selection and easier parking. By late morning it's crowded.
  • Bring a tote bag and some cash, though many vendors take cards.
  • Make a morning of it: shop the market, get breakfast on Main Street, then walk to the bayfront.

The Bay Park: Downtown's New Bayfront

The Bay Park is the biggest change downtown in years. It's a long-term plan to turn 53 acres of city-owned bayfront into a public park, and the first phase opened in October 2022. It's free and open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., with the entrance at 1055 Boulevard of the Arts.

  • What's there now: walking paths along the water and through restored mangroves, open lawns, a kayak launch, a playground and The Nest Cafe.
  • Free events: the park hosts a busy calendar of free classes, concerts and programs. Check thebaysarasota.org before you go.
  • What's coming: the second phase, with a resilient shoreline, day docks and more park space, was nearly finished as of August 2026, and the first waterfront restaurant is planned for 2027. Expect some construction fencing for now.

Bayfront Park and Marina Jack

South of The Bay, the bayfront continues along the marina at Bayfront Park. Walk the seawall past rows of sailboats and the giant "Unconditional Surrender" statue of a sailor kissing a nurse, which stands between O'Leary's and Marina Jack. Marina Jack, at 2 Marina Plaza, has restaurants overlooking the water and is a popular place for sunset dinners. The bayfront is also where you'll watch the Holiday Boat Parade of Lights in December.

The bayfront faces west across Sarasota Bay toward the islands, so sunsets here are pink and orange skies over the boats rather than a sun-on-the-horizon view. For more spots, see our sunset spots guide.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Downtown

A few minutes south of Main Street on the bay, Selby Gardens' downtown campus at 1534 Mound Street is known for its orchids, bromeliads and other tropical plants, plus a banyan grove and views over the water. It's open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Buy timed tickets online and check current rates at selby.org.

What to know: Selby is in the middle of a major expansion. Construction on the second phase of its master plan, including a new conservatory complex and learning pavilion, began after a December 2025 groundbreaking, with completion targeted for 2028. The gardens stay open, but expect some areas to be closed off. In December, Selby's Lights in Bloom fills the downtown campus with holiday lights.

Arts and Performances

The city calls itself Florida's Cultural Coast, and downtown is where much of it happens.

  • Sarasota Opera House: on Pineapple Avenue, this Mediterranean Revival theater opened as the Edwards Theatre in April 1926, so 2026 is its 100th year. Sarasota Opera's 2026-27 season opens Oct. 30 with Hansel and Gretel, and its Winter Festival runs from Feb. 6 through March 21, 2027, opening with La traviata.
  • Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall: the purple hall on the bayfront hosts touring Broadway shows, concerts and comedians. The city is planning a new performing arts center at The Bay, and the Van Wezel is expected to keep operating alongside it.
  • Theater, galleries and festivals: downtown has year-round theater, gallery walks and street art festivals. The Downtown Sarasota Festival of the Arts usually takes over Main Street in late winter or early spring. Check the city's events page for dates.

Parking Downtown

  • Garages: the Palm Avenue Garage (1289 N. Palm Ave.) and State Street Garage (1538 State St.) give you the first hour free when you enter your plate, then charge by the hour. The garages are gateless, so pay at a station, by app or by text soon after you park.
  • Street parking: as of June 2026, paid street parking is enforced from 8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday, and from 1 p.m. on Sundays. Read the signs and meters where you park.
  • Event days: garages can charge a flat event rate during big events like the holiday parade.

Getting from Downtown to St. Armands and the Beaches

Downtown and St. Armands Circle are connected by the John Ringling Bridge, and the free Bay Runner trolley runs between them. It starts downtown near Main Street, crosses the bridge, loops around St. Armands Circle and continues out to Lido Beach and South Lido. It runs into the evening, later on Fridays and Saturdays, and the Bay Runner app shows when the next trolley is coming. It's an easy way to spend the day at the beach and come back downtown for dinner without moving the car. Walking the Ringling Bridge itself is also a local favorite at sunset.

Once you're on the Circle, our St. Armands Circle guide and Lido Beach guide pick up from there.

Bring a Souvenir Home

If a stroll down Main Street and an afternoon on the bayfront end up being your favorite part of the trip, stop by The Sarasota Style at 410 St. Armands Circle, a short trolley ride from downtown. A few ideas:
